I did everything in my power to make it that. That included creating a signed and numbered edition that would be signed by all contributors, a rare book given the quality of writers signing next to one another. But that edition of the book sold out almost immediately, leaving many readers upset that they didn’t have a chance at attaining one.
That’s when I thought of writer Dave Wolverton aka Dave Farland. He is the fantasy author of the Runelords series—and his son had been severely injured in a long boarding accident. Like me, the family did not have health insurance due to a pre-existing condition and like me they were being undone by medical debt. And a thought occurred to me. I had not planned on making Advance Reader Copies of Unfettered but what if I did? If I did, I could do a limited hardcover run in ARC form, give those people who had missed out on the signed and numbered edition something rare and unique, and raise money for Dave and his family.
I did just that. The ARC of Unfettered published a month before the trade hardcover. I sold them at $100 with all proceeds from the first fifty books going to Dave. It did not take long to sell those first fifty. All of you helped me raise $5000 for Dave and his son. It speaks to the generosity found in the sci-fi/fantasy community.
I wrote Dave that $5000 check and he was thrilled. I had a chance of catching up with him in Seattle at the Emerald City Comic Con a few weeks ago and he offered to contribute a story to Unfettered II, the sequel anthology where all proceeds will go to other artists and writers in need of medical debt relief.
I couldn’t say no. He’s a great writer and like so many of us, he wants to give back for the generosity shown him.
I have not sold out of the ARC though. I still have about 50 books left. Therefore, I have discounted the ARC from $100 to $50. I need to make space for Neverland’s Shadow, the next anthology, and what better way than to reward all of you with a discounted limited hardcover signed by Terry Brooks, Peter Orullian, Todd Lockwood, and me.
