Details: The Terry Brooks Limited Editions

photo-terrybrooksI have ever been a Terry Brooks fan.

I first read The Sword of Shannara in October 1988 when I was thirteen years old. That Christmas, I opened a smallish, unassuming gift and it turned out to be paperback copies of Elfstones and Wishsong. The three books left an impression. I eventually became Terry’s webmaster and my mother’s small gift so long ago has influenced my life in big ways.

A few years ago, Terry and I posted a poll (view it HERE) on his website about leather-bound editions. I’ve always wanted them. You all resoundingly made your interest known as well.

And now, with Terry helping to guide this project, I get my dream of having these influential novels in leather and on my shelves!

Here are details about the books:

The editions will be produced with the same high-end quality materials as those that went into the Signed & Numbered edition of Unfettered and will be designed similarly. You can see photos of that book HERE.

Now to the real questions! How and when can you order these editions?

A little history first. The Lettered Edition of The Broken Empire by Mark Lawrence crashed the Grim Oak Press website and PayPal, upsetting a lot of people. To avoid that, I am doing something a bit different with Shannara and Sometimes the Magic Works.

If you are interested in buying the Lettered Editions, fill out the form below:

Then, on April 18th and with a random number generator, I will select on video those 52 lucky winners who can order the Lettered Editions of Shannara and Sometimes the Magic Works. The 52 people will be sent an email with a link and password that allows them to order the four Lettered Editions. The 1000 copies of each book will go up for sale on April 25th!

These books are available to international readers as well.

If you have any questions, feel free to post them below! I will try to address them and update this page with the answers.

This is going to be an exciting project and I’m excited to have you all along for the ride!

More news soon,

Shawn

  1. This sounds AWESOME! Congratulations Shawn!

  2. Am I reading correctly that only the Shannara titles are involved in the drawing? If so, what are the ordering details for Sometimes the Magic Works?

    1. Unfortunately, no. Those who win the rights to the Shannara Lettered Editions will also have first dibs on the Lettered Edition of SOMETIMES THE MAGIC WORKS. Those who do not want the Lettered Edition of SOMETIMES THE MAGIC WORKS will forfeit their lettered edition and those will be made available through a different random drawing at a later date.

  3. Hi Shawn, I used a different email-address from the one I used to register to Grim Oak… hope it’s ok anyway…
BTW, how will you manage the lettered editions of Sometimes the magic works and when will the preorder for this title start?
Last but not least, are you going to use the original artworks for the Shannara trilogy?
    Cheers
    Andrea

    1. I am not using the original artworks for the Shannara trilogy. These books will feature all new artwork done by Marc Simonetti. The Lettered Editions of SOMETIMES THE MAGIC WORKS will be offered to the lucky 52 for first purchase. I can also match the letter/number with those who have ordered THE BROKEN EMPIRE by Mark Lawrence limited editions.

      1. A pity for the artwork…
No new artworks can ever match the original ones 🙁
But I can understand that rights for the use of the old ones would have been too expensive…

  4. Exiting news, I got 2 questions on this:

    1. What about “Sometimes the magic works” – how will that go up for sale ?
    2. Will you be able to match the limited edition numbers to some of your other S/N editions ?

    Regards,

    Rene

    1. 1. SOMETIMES THE MAGIC WORKS will go up for sale on April 25th, along with the Shannara editions. The Lettered Edition of SOMETIMES THE MAGIC WORKS will be made available to the lucky 52 who win the right to purchase first.

      2. Yes, I will match numbers with other S&N editions that Grim Oak has published. I think that’s the coolest thing about all of this.

  5. Hi Shawn,

Seems a very fair way to deal with the problem of demand exceeding supply in the case of lettered editions. I wish you continuing success with publishing some great fantasy titles.

    Best

    Chris

  6. Very glad you decided not to call it quits.
    Best of luck with this.

  7. I put my name in for the lettered ones… Now I wait and see if I get the set or not… They will be a nice addition to Unfettered. If I don’t get them I will have to get the other editions.

    1. And as Rene and Andrea asked what about “Sometimes Magic Works”.

      Derek

      1. I have just updated the page to include an answer to this. Read above.

  8. Hi Shawn. This is great stuff! I’ve read the questions and answers above but I still have a question regarding Sometimes the Magic Works. If you want the lettered editions and opt for the discounted $1100 prepay is STMW part of that $1100 or in addition to it? I.E. is it then $1200 with STMW in the bundle?

    1. In addition. The total would be $1200.

  9. I think this has been answered already but just checking for clarification. If selected as one of the lucky 52 people for the lettered Shannara preorders and Sometimes the Magic Works, do we have the option of purchasing just one or the other and relinquishing one. What I mean is could one decide to keep the lettered versions of the Shannara novels but allow the “won” chance of getting Sometimes the Magic Works to go back into the “pool” of buyers for some other lucky person to get? I’m really excited for the chance at the Shannara novels but am not really interested in the other book. Although…I guess I could sell it off on eBay, but that just makes me look money greedy. I’d rather have another fan get a fair chance at it.

    1. Yes, you will have the right to give up your “right” to Sometimes the Magic Works. I already know people that will be interested in it. Ha.

  10. […] that the Shannara project has been announced, artist Marc Simonetti can begin work. He has already started re-reading The Sword of Shannara and […]

  11. Hi Shawn

When I completed the form to get on the letter list, I indicated that I wanted to do split payments. If I am selected, will I have the option to do the pay all at once? Or am I locked into my choice?

    Thanks!

  12. Hey Shawn,
I’m curious, what time is the draw for the lettered editions, and if chosen how long do we have to claim the purchase?

  13. Hey Shawn,
Has the drawing taken place? Still hopeful my name is on the list…
    Thanks!

    1. It hasn’t happened yet. My mother passed away. I am dealing with other things at the moment sadly.

      1. My condolences. Family comes first.

      2. I’m really sorry to hear that. My thoughts are with you. Take care.

      3. Shawn,
I am so sorry to hear that. Thinking of you and your family. Thank you for the response.
        Brett

      4. Just saw this. You and family are in our prayers. I am so very sorry for your loss.

        1. Thank you. I’m broken. No other way to describe it.

  14. I can’t sit still from anticipation!

  15. So sorry for your loss. Our hearts and prayers are with you and yours.

  16. When do these go on sale? its April 25th

    1. I’m working on it. My mother passed away and I’ve been dealing with a lot of things that have set back my own work.

      1. Thanks Shawn, just excited

  17. I’m so sorry to hear your mother passed away, Shawn.
My condolences to you and your loved ones.
Family comes first: take good care of each other.

    Siep

  18. My sincere condolences to you and your family during this difficult time…. Take care of family matters and we can all wait. Family is always top priority.

I ordered the leather bound set. If possible, could all the numbers in this set match?

I have a question later about a cancelled order. But not right now. You have more important issues to take care of right now.

    Thank you very much!

  19. So aside from the slipcase, the double-page art is one of the differences between the lettered and limited editions? Does that mean that there’s art in the lettered editions that isn’t in the limited editions? Other than that, the fact that there are approximately a 20th as many copies made is what makes it valuable and collectable.

    1. There is a full-color insert that is in the lettered edition that is not in the limited edition. And of course, the clamshell case that protects the book.
