Demystifying Clamshells and Casings

Demystifying Clamshells and Casings

So... there has been a bit of confusion lately thanks to some changes that Grim Oak Press made around the inclusion/exclusion/ordering of clamshell cases for our lettered and limited editions.  We took a chance at making things better for everyone with Uprooted and Faerie Tale by decoupling the clamshell from the lettered edition and the results were not what we hoped.

The goal was to give our customers the choice of whether they wanted to pay for a clamshell that is usually included by other small presses at a higher price point.  We believed this ala carte style would give more flexibility in how a collector edition book could be presented on a bookshelf and perhaps save a little money.

After listening to the feedback from many of you, we decided to gracefully apologize for the change and go back to a model that we believe will both simplify and keep the uniqueness of a lettered edition in place, while giving folks a new option to protect their limited editions.

Let's talk about what this means for the past, present, and future.

Uprooted and Faerie Tale:

  1. The lettered editions of these titles, as originally advertised, will come in a slipcase and you have a choice to order a clamshell separately.
  2. We will introduce the option to purchase a slipcase for those who would like to protect their limited editions.

The Riftwar Saga, The Empire Trilogy, The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, and future publications:

  1. All lettered edition books will include a unique clamshell made specifically for this edition and be priced appropriately.
  2. All limited edition books will have an option to separately purchase a slipcase that will be unique and made specifically for the limited edition.
  3. All slipcases and clamshells will be highest quality and hand made to fit the specific title.

Past publications such as The Shannara Trilogy and other select titles:

  1. A slipcase will be added to our online store for you to order.
  2. Once we have accumulated enough orders, we will commission the slipcases to be made.

It is our hope that this model will create both the flexibility in purchasing as well as maintain our standard for creating highly valuable and unique editions that you love to put on your bookshelf!
