When I finished Uprooted by Naomi Novik, I knew I had just read something special.
I was not the only one who felt that way. The magic of the novel, its prose, and its characters resonated with readers everywhere. Through word of mouth, Uprooted became a book on everyone's reading lists. And when award season came, it won the Nebula Award for Best Novel and was nominated for the Hugo Award in the same category.
I knew I wanted Uprooted at Grim Oak Press. After all, as editorial director, I choose what books we produce and they will always be books that I want on my own shelves. When I approached Novik about this possibility, she was super excited but we both knew we also had to get an artist to match well with the beauty of the story.
Enter Donato. I have wanted to work with him for a long time. I own several original pieces of Donato art and one of them — Kvothe: Chords — features the Patrick Rothfuss character in nature. Since most of Uprooted's setting is within the wildest and darkest of woods, I felt Donato would be a perfect fit.
Little did I know how wonderful a fit. Donato read Uprooted in two days and loved it so much that he signed on as illustrator. I asked Donato for ten interior illustrations; he decided to illustrate 32, one for every chapter.
As you can see, Uprooted became the perfect book for Grim Oak Press to launch its new line-up with. We are super excited about bringing Novik's award-winning story to life in a new way.
There are two editions:
- Limited: 750 signed and numbered leather hardcover copies
- Lettered: 52 signed and leather bound copies, housed in a custom slipcase or traycase
The cover featured on these books is not the final cover. It is merely a placeholder while Donato paints the full-color wraparound artwork. It is one of the interiors on the book though, the Dragon's tower.
